Role Overview
The General Counsel is an in-house legal leader supporting a growing and forward-thinking organization.
The role provides trusted legal advice and contributes to self-government implementation, development, housing, and organizational growth.
The General Counsel reports to senior leadership and works closely with Council.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide practical legal opinions and advice to senior leadership, Council, committees, and internal stakeholders.
- Advise on Aboriginal law, self-government, and self-government implementation matters.
- Identify legal and operational issues, assess risk, and provide recommendations to advance initiatives.
- Manage the broader self-government implementation plan through legal and operational considerations.
- Support initiatives involving development, housing, administration, and continued organizational growth.
- Oversee external legal counsel and related legal matters.
Qualifications
- Candidates must be called to the BC Bar and be in good standing.
- Seven to ten years of post-call experience is ideal but is not stated as mandatory.
- Extensive Aboriginal law experience and a strong understanding of self-government structures and implementation processes are required.
