Founding ML Engineer

This sector is bound to grow into a gigantic industry. As models advance, their insatiable appetite for both compute & data will grow. Yet almost all companies serving this market are insanely short-sighted: they’re talent recruitment agencies masquerading as tech startups: a lab needs data, the vendor recruits costly contractors, & the workforce gets reset when the project ends. They make money in the short-term but they have nothing proprietary keeping them afloat once the sector matures and becomes more efficient.

Basis is building the opposite. We build consumer products people genuinely want to use, reward them for participating, & own the infra that transforms user behavior into high-quality training signals for labs. What we’re doing is way harder. We have to align incentives across users and labs, solve long-term user acquisition and retention, automate marketing/payouts/QA, train SOTA models and evals in-house, and operate one-of-a-kind quality systems across gigantic volumes.

As a result we have a continuously running, self-improving pipeline that is deeply automated, highly optimized, & instantly and infinitely scalable. Every project makes our products more engaging, our models more capable, our network larger, our quality systems stronger, & our understanding of lab needs more precise. Each cycle makes us faster & better. While others sell one project at a time, we’re gradually building up an unbeatable behemoth of a system.

Our goal is to build the world’s largest consumer products for teaching AI about humanity and the real world: a connection through which frontier models can learn from millions and soon hundreds of millions of people every day.

Very few companies are attempting to build this system and even fewer have the foresight to actually do it. We’re confident Basis will become the defining company in this category.

Ambiguity: No matter your role, we will spend considerable time teaching you everything we know about this field, our product, our needs, & our systems. Once we’ve shared all the context, you’re expected to make independent decisions and lead the way through the ambiguity that comes with working on the cutting edge (you will do things that no one has ever built before). You will become the world’s leading expert on whatever you work on here.
