Role Overview
Support children with learning, physical, behavioral, communication, and other special educational needs as a teaching assistant.
Work alongside the classroom teacher in a special education learning environment.
Learning and Classroom Support
- Help children with school work and provide instruction under the classroom teacher’s supervision.
- Prepare learning materials adapted from teacher plans to suit individual students.
- Assist with lesson preparation and the organization of the classroom environment.
- Help children understand instructions and encourage confidence and independence.
Care and Development
- Contribute to education, social, behavioral, and personal care plans.
- Encourage communication, including through non-verbal methods such as Makaton or PECS.
- Recognize when children are upset and provide comfort.
- Attend to pupils’ physical needs, including toileting and other personal care.
Activities and Transport
- Support students during social activities, outings, therapy sessions, and out-of-school visits.
