Due to reorganisation and ongoing increase in demand, Stirling Dynamics is recruiting a Technical Capability Manager for the Mechanical Design Group. The Mechanical Design Group provides the specialist technical design capabilities for our internal products and consultancy services across aerospace, marine, flight simulator and urban air mobility (eVTOL) sectors.
As a member of the senior management team, you will be responsible for the development and management of the mechanical design capability, working alongside other capability managers to plan and provide the necessary multi-disciplinary skills to meet the various project requirements.
The Mechanical Design group provides technical skills covering the following areas:
3D CAD model generation
Manufacture drawings generation and sign off
Generation of technical documentation
Mechanism design
Component sizing
Component selection
Material selection
Static stress
Dynamic stress
Fatigue analysis
Support to production
Support to test
The areas for application are extensive and cover a wide variety of applications including (but not limited to):
Landing gear component and system design
Hydraulic component and equipment design
Electro-mechanical actuator design
Simulator inceptor and product design
Airworthy product design (and knowledge of regulatory requirements)
Mechatronic systems

This role will be based in our Bristol office however as part of our commitment to flexible working, employees are able to work from home for part of the week.
Stirling is a medium/small dynamic and growing business, and to meet the exciting challenges, it is expected that technical managers balance hands-on technical work and technical leadership together with the management activities of capability development, resource planning and line management.
Responsible for the Mechanical Design capability, including day to day management and longer-term strategy.
Ultimately responsible for the quality of mechanical design internal and external deliverables
Technical project leadership
Manufacture drawing Check/Approval
Resource management and allocation of the Mechanical Design team members in line with the project requirements
Define and manage annual budget needs for internal development of capabilities and processes in line with company objectives
Support business development activities
Contribute to project proposals and bid, including technical solution and estimated quantity of work
Hold technical check and/or approval for the capability area in line with the delegated authority
Support the capability team members to ensure that they have continued development in line with the individual and company needs
Recruitment of suitably qualified and skilled engineers to support the growth of the company
The successful candidate must currently hold Security Check (SC) clearance or be eligible to obtain SC
Candidates will ideally be degree qualified (or equivalent), in a related discipline preferably Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with strong demonstrable experience of mechanical design in a highly regulated field.

Candidates would be expected to have over 12 years experience in relevant mechanical design roles, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership or management role, with experience of technical leadership and line management.
