Business and Team Context
J A Brooks operates across the UK and Germany and has prefabrication facilities in Colchester with a CAD and BIM team.
The business delivers data centre projects in Europe and the UK and commercial M&E works mainly in London.
The Technical Services Engineering Manager will lead an office-based engineering team across the UK and Europe, including the Colchester BIM team.
Experience and Technical Knowledge
- The role requires broad M&E services and systems knowledge across commercial, healthcare and fit-out environments, including data centres.
- Candidates must understand commercial, pre-construction, construction, commissioning and handover activities within building services.
- The role requires strong risk assessment, tender evaluation, design-process knowledge and the ability to produce costed engineering reports.
- Candidates must be able to communicate at all levels, work under pressure and support the development of less experienced engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop the engineering team, recruit staff as needed, mentor graduates and technicians and oversee performance reviews.
- Evaluate tenders, identify design issues across project stages and prepare engineering reports supporting directors’ risk decisions.
- Manage and check external design consultants and provide technical solutions to project and site teams.
- Maintain financial accountability, track estimating lessons learned and demonstrate engineering team savings or losses.
- Engage with clients and professional teams and help extend existing and new client relationships.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental policies and legislation, including significant CDM responsibilities.
Qualifications
- An appropriate level of engineering qualification is required, including the stated BEng (Hons) qualification.
- Registration with the Engineering Council is listed as a qualification requirement.
- Membership of a relevant institute, preferably CIBSE and ideally at Chartered level, is preferred.
Reporting and Location
- The role reports to the Operations Director and Board Directors and interfaces with the wider project structure.
- The engineering team is predominantly office based, with members located in the UK, Germany and Denmark.
