Job Description
The Embedded Hardware Engineer will design, develop, test, and maintain electronic systems and components for unmanned ground vehicles.
The role will design the FireAnt’s main PCBA across requirements, architecture, circuit design, PCB layout, power management, embedded firmware, board bring-up, and field support.
Core Responsibilities
- Design power conversion and distribution, high-current motor bus, embedded microcontroller, Ethernet switching and PoE, CAN networking, and sensor and payload I/O.
- Release fabrication packages, write ECOs, and manage manufacturing quotes and batch quality with contract manufacturers.
- Integrate boards with compute systems, ESCs, GNSS, IMUs, satellite communications, radios, and payload ports.
- Perform board bring-up, validation, bench testing, thermal testing, and SMD rework.
- Design fault detection and health telemetry and root-cause field failures to design fixes.
- Collaborate with mechanical design teams and vendors on PCBA integration, connectors, and wiring harnesses.
- Support fielded robots and contribute to advanced robotics systems.
Required Qualifications
- Proficiency designing mixed-signal and power circuits for battery-powered systems, including switching, DC-DC conversion, and protection circuits.
- Experience with schematic capture and multilayer PCB layout in Altium Designer, including high-current planning, high-speed routing, manufacturing targets, and mechanical integration.
- Knowledge of power distribution and management for battery-powered vehicles.
- Experience developing STM32 embedded firmware in C with FreeRTOS, CAN or FDCAN, and Ethernet or lwIP.
- Ability to perform board bring-up, validation, oscilloscope debugging, full-load testing, thermal testing, and SMD rework.
- Experience designing fault detection and health telemetry and root-causing field failures.
- Ability to obtain and hold a U.S. security clearance.
- Ability to work onsite in the Phoenix, Arizona area.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience with unmanned vehicles or high-reliability electronics for military or industrial applications.
- Embedded C/C++ and hardware-software interfacing experience.
- Familiarity with SPICE, MATLAB, precision network time synchronization, or embedded Ethernet switch integration.
- Experience with NDAA-aware component selection, alternate sourcing, BOM management, wiring harness design, and vendor management.
- A track record of designing and shipping robotics or similar electronics through multiple production revisions.
