Externship Overview
The externship enables veterinary students to gain real-world clinical experience by applying classroom learning in a veterinary practice.
Students in any year may apply for clinical-year externship blocks or informal externship experience.
Learning Opportunities and Responsibilities
- Work with a supervising veterinarian on client communication, patient histories, physical examinations, estimates, treatment plans, diagnostics, and in-house laboratory work.
- Observe, assist with, or perform surgical and dental procedures, depending on the student's experience and hospital needs.
- Practice medical management, time management, fiscal responsibility, record keeping, and relationship building with medical teams, support staff, and clients.
- Learning opportunities and responsibilities vary by year in school and individual hospital needs.
Student Qualification
- Applicants must be veterinary students; students in any grade may apply.
Extern Benefits
