Director, Union Participation & Resource Development

As part of the Resource Development team, you can connect UWBC's fundraising priorities, department goals, and the goals of the Labour movement.

You are a leader for union-linked fundraising and engagement initiatives spanning from major Labour-linked campaigns to education & training.

You are a steward of positive relations with Labour movement representatives, UWBC departments, community partners, and more.

The Director, Union Participation and Resource Development is a member of the Resource Development department, which includes Corporate Partnerships, New Business, and Philanthropy.

The role is primarily responsible for fundraising, engagement, and stewardship with the Labour movement while supporting Resource Development priorities and organizational revenue goals.

It is also responsible for stewarding United Way’s partnership with the Canandian Labour Congress in British Columbia and it’s members.

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer (CDO), the Director develops and implements integrated fundraising, stewardship, partnership, education, and engagement strategies that strengthen the relationship between UWBC and Labour partners while advancing organizational revenue and relationship goals.

The role works collaboratively with the Resource Development team, UWBC staff, volunteers, Board committees, Labour leaders and committees, and relevant community partners to cultivate and steward relationships, support workplace and union-linked campaigns, deliver Labour-focused programming, and identify opportunities where Labour and United Way priorities intersect.

Key Responsibility Area: Resource Development, Workplace Campaigns and Labour-Linked Fundraising

• Develops and implements annual fundraising plans for assigned union-linked accounts, programs, projects, events, and stakeholder groups.
• Sets financial and non-financial fundraising goals and develops campaign, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and renewal strategies.
• Independently analyzes data and prepares plans for account growth, donor engagement, prospect development, and stewardship.
• Works with Resource Development colleagues across Corporate Partnerships, New Business, and Philanthropy to support annual campaign goals, workplace fundraising, donor engagement, and campaign reporting.
• Identifies new revenue opportunities where Labour, workplaces, community partners, and UWBC priorities intersect.
• Maintains systems for accountability, tracking, reporting, and follow-up related to assigned fundraising activities.
• Aligns fundraising strategy with Resource Development departmental priorities and UWBC organizational strategies.

Key Responsibility Area: Signature Labour Campaigns and Events

• Leads the planning, coordination, execution, stewardship, evaluation, and follow-up for key Labour-linked deliverables, including Period Promise and Labour Appreciation Night.
• Supports planning and coordination for Labour Day and other Labour-focused events, campaigns, and recognition activities as assigned.
• Develops event and campaign plans, timelines, budgets, stakeholder engagement plans, communications supports, volunteer roles, and reporting processes.
• Coordinates with Resource Development, Marketing and Communications, Community Impact, Labour partners, volunteers, and other stakeholders to ensure campaigns and events are well executed and aligned with UWBC priorities.
• Identifies opportunities to deepen union participation, strengthen partner relationships, and grow revenue or engagement through signature campaigns and events.

Key Responsibility Area: Labour Movement Engagement and Partnership

• Builds understanding of Labour’s role in the community and within UWBC, and supports mutual understanding between UWBC and the Labour movement.
• Recruits, engages, supports, and stewards Labour leaders, union representatives, and volunteers in support of UWBC priorities.
• Maintains and strengthens ties between UWBC and the Labour movement through regular communication, consultation, problem solving, and partnership development.
• Articulates UWBC priorities to Labour partners and Labour perspectives to UWBC on issues of mutual concern.
• Supports Labour partners with assigned activities where appropriate, including volunteer recruitment, policy development, education, training, communications, and preparation for public or media-facing activities.
• Participates with Labour movement leadership, UWBC committees, task groups, policy groups, conferences, seminars, and events as required.

Key Responsibility Area: Program Delivery, Education and Training

• Leads the planning, coordination, promotion, delivery, evaluation, follow-up, and ongoing support for Labour-focused education, training, and advocacy programs.
• Provides training and education for UWBC staff, volunteers, agencies, and partners on the roles, structure, priorities, and current issues of the Labour movement.
• Provides training and education for Labour movement leadership on the roles, structure, priorities, and current issues of UWBC.
• Supports graduates and participants of Labour-focused programs by maintaining engagement, offering consultation, and connecting them with UWBC and community priorities.
• Organizes or participates in community and Labour conferences, seminars, union schools, CLC Winter School, Labour Council events, and other applicable functions.

• Develops and implements annual plans for assigned operations, programs, campaigns, and partnership activities.
• Leads forecasting, goal-setting, progress tracking, and regular reporting for assigned fundraising, campaign, event, and partnership portfolios.
• Works with department leads and colleagues to create and execute innovative Resource Development and engagement strategies.
• Leads departmental planning, budgeting, reporting, and evaluation related to assigned portfolios.
• Provides strategic information and guidance to UWBC departments to assist in developing goals, plans, and procedures connected to union participation and fundraising.
• Works with UWBC and Labour committees, task groups, policy groups, and partner tables as required.
• Supports volunteers at all levels, including recruitment, placement, orientation, engagement, and recognition.
• Performs other related duties consistent with the purpose and level of the role.

• Equivalent combination of education and experience and/or education to a degree level in a related discipline.
• Training courses offered by the Labour movement are considered a strong asset.

• Progressive experience in fundraising, revenue development, workplace campaigns, stakeholder engagement, community relations, event or campaign delivery, and/or Labour movement partnership roles.
• Strong understanding of organized Labour, including the local Labour movement, and knowledge of the voluntary/non-profit sector and UWBC’s community role.
• Demonstrated success building collaborative relationships across diverse stakeholders, including unions, volunteers, donors, workplaces, agencies, and community partners.
• Experience developing and executing campaign plans, cultivation strategies, stewardship approaches, program plans, signature events, and partnership initiatives.
• Experience facilitating groups, delivering education or training, and supporting volunteers and community leaders.

• Ability to build, steward, and grow complex relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Strong fundraising, donor engagement, volunteer engagement, account management, campaign planning, event coordination, and stewardship skills.
• Ability to think creatively and strategically to mediate, negotiate, and problem-solve with individuals and groups internally and externally.
• Strong facilitation, presentation, instructional, diplomatic, and persuasive communication skills.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; additional languages are an asset.
• Ability to work in a self-directed manner within UWBC policies and procedures.
• Personal credibility in the community and the Labour movement, with a commitment to continuous learning, collaboration, and service to community.

• Adaptable to schedule changes and available outside of business hours to attend meetings & events.
• Has access to reliable transportation to organize & attend events.
• Must be based in Lower Mainland and willing to travel throughout the province as needed.

This is an exempt role.

This position is at $111,180.00 annually.

Candidates must live within 80 KMs (commuting distance) from our office as this position is currently a hybrid role and requires a minimum of three (3) days of in-office attendance per week.
