Design Manager

Role Overview

Client Engagement and Leadership

• Lead one or more client projects through project teams and grow business for base building and interiors projects.
• Prepare proposals, negotiate contracts and fees, and communicate project objectives, scope, terms and schedules.
• Enable project teams to reach their potential while maintaining a positive and collaborative team environment.

Project and Financial Management

• Manage project process, service delivery, documentation, client satisfaction and client trust throughout delivery.
• Manage scheduling, budgets, staffing and project setup with clients, subcontractors, vendors and contractors.
• Monitor work plans, fees, billings, collections, profitability targets, expenses and productivity projections.
• Oversee billing and fee management in accordance with Gensler policies and procedures.

Firm Collaboration and Sustainability

• Collaborate with Design Managers, Finance, Human Resources, Office Directors, studio leaders and office staff.
• Develop best-practice integration, client satisfaction, recruiting, relationship building and service integration strategies.
• Define project sustainability targets, support client ESG goals and advocate for Gensler sustainability commitments.
• Encourage sustainability learning and make sustainable design integral to every project.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Interior Design or a related field.
• 10+ years of related project management experience and 15+ years of total architecture or design experience.
• Experience with project scope, fee negotiation, financial performance and the full project lifecycle through post-occupancy.
• Knowledge of building codes, standards, building structures and architectural, interior and furniture design.
• Knowledge of sustainable design principles and demonstrated commitment to sustainable building practices.
• Professional license or certification is preferred; sustainability rating accreditation is also preferred.

Sustainability Qualifications

• Understand principles for leading and achieving net-zero projects and facilitate sustainability-focused discussions.
• Previous sustainable design project experience is preferred, with at least one relevant project represented in the portfolio.

Design Technology Qualifications

• Understand the BIM project lifecycle, BIM deliverables and terminology in contracts.
• Use BIM collaboration practices including cloud-based markups, consultant coordination and clash detection.
• Establish and manage BIM teams and design teams using Revit, Rhino and Grasshopper.
• Real-time rendering, material management and information management tools are desirable.

Applications

• Design authoring applications include Revit, Rhino, AutoCAD and Navisworks.
• Collaboration applications include BIM 360.
• Computational design applications include Grasshopper and Dynamo.
• Other listed applications include Insight, Sefaira, DIVA, Ladybug Tools, V-Ray, Enscape, Twinmotion, 3ds Max, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Unreal Engine, Unity, C# and Python.
