Role summary
Lead Controls Engineering and Electrical Build teams while overseeing workshop operations for robotic and automated systems.

Ensure automation projects are delivered safely, on time, to budget and to required quality standards.
Controls engineering leadership
- Lead Controls Engineers, Electrical Designers and PLC Programmers.
- Provide technical direction for automation and robotic control system design.
- Establish standards, templates and best practices.
- Review controls architecture, electrical schematics and software designs.
- Ensure solutions are robust, scalable and aligned with customer requirements.
Workshop operations
- Manage machine build, wiring, testing and integration activities.
- Allocate resources across projects and align workshop work with schedules.
- Monitor labour utilisation and productivity.
- Maintain workshop procedures, work instructions, housekeeping and facility standards.
Automation and controls systems
- Oversee PLC, HMI and SCADA applications, industrial networking, motion and servo systems.
- Oversee robotic integration, machine safety, vision inspection, data acquisition and manufacturing execution interfaces.
- Potential platforms include Siemens TIA Portal, Rockwell Studio 5000, Beckhoff TwinCAT, Mitsubishi GX Works and Omron Sysmac.
- Potential robotic systems include ABB, FANUC, KUKA, UR and Yaskawa.
Project delivery
- Support project planning, estimating, scheduling, milestones and engineering deliverables.
- Ensure equipment is tested and validated before shipment.
- Support Factory Acceptance Tests and Site Acceptance Tests.
- Manage commissioning and technical support requirements.
- Identify and mitigate technical and project risks.
Essential qualifications and experience
- HNC, HND or degree in Electrical, Controls, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics or a related discipline.
- Eight to ten or more years of industrial automation or machine-building experience.
- Three to five or more years of leadership or management experience.
- Experience delivering robotic and automated machinery projects.
Preferred qualifications
- Degree-qualified engineer is preferred.
- IET or equivalent professional body membership is preferred.
- IOSH or NEBOSH qualification is preferred.
- Project management qualification such as PRINCE2, PMP or APMP is preferred.
Technical skills
- PLC programming and troubleshooting, HMI and SCADA development, industrial communications and motion control.
- Machine safety design, electrical system architecture, panel design, assembly, wiring and installation.
- Fault finding, diagnostics, FAT, SAT, commissioning and start-up support.
- Electrical schematic interpretation and software or engineering tools including EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, Microsoft Project and ERP/MRP systems.
Salary and benefits
- Salary range is £60,000 to £70,000.

- Full-time role located in the Northern Home Counties.
