Cloud Platform Director

Summary

Key Responsibilities

• Define and execute cloud platform strategy, roadmap, and operating model aligned to product and business objectives.
• Lead platform engineering, SRE, cloud architecture, and infrastructure teams; recruit, mentor, and develop technical leaders.
• Own platform architecture and standards for compute, networking, storage, identity, observability, CI/CD, and service mesh across cloud environments.
• Drive cloud adoption, migrations, and modernization (lift‑and‑shift, replatforming, cloud‑native refactors) with clear migration patterns and runbooks.
• Establish and enforce guardrails for security, cost control, compliance, and multi‑tenant isolation; partner with security, compliance, and finance teams.
• Build developer self‑service capabilities: platform APIs, internal developer portals, IaC modules, automated provisioning, and catalog of platform services.
• Implement and operate robust observability, logging, tracing, alerting, and incident management; define SLOs/SLIs and runbook-driven incident response.
• Optimize cloud costs via rightsizing, reservations, autoscaling, and chargeback/showback models; report platform spend and ROI.
• Drive automation across provisioning, deploys, testing, and recovery; promote Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation) and GitOps practices.
• Oversee vendor and managed‑service relationships (cloud providers, middleware, observability, security tooling); negotiate contracts and SLAs.
• Ensure high availability and disaster recovery planning across regions and accounts; run regular DR exercises.
• Establish platform governance, tagging, and lifecycle policies; manage cloud account organization, networking topology, and IAM hygiene.
• Lead cross‑functional initiatives for performance, scalability, and reliability improvements; participate in architecture reviews and major incident post‑mortems.
• Measure and report platform health, delivery velocity, cost, and reliability to executives; continuously improve platform metrics.
• Champion cloud best practices, run training programs, and enable teams to migrate and operate on the platform effectively.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience; advanced degree a plus.
• 8+ years of infrastructure/cloud/DevOps experience with 3+ years in a leadership role managing platform or SRE teams.
• Deep expertise in public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and cloud services (compute, networking, storage, IAM).
• Proven experience with IaC (Terraform, CloudFormation), CI/CD pipelines, container orchestration (Kubernetes), and GitOps.
• Strong background in observability and incident management (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Datadog, PagerDuty).
• Demonstrated success implementing cloud governance, cost optimization, and security/ compliance controls.
• Experience negotiating vendor contracts and managing third‑party cloud services.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder‑management skills; ability to influence across engineering and product organizations.
• Preferred skills
• Certifications: AWS Certified Solutions Architect, GCP Professional Cloud Architect, or Azure Solutions Architect.
• Experience with multi‑cloud strategies, service mesh (Istio/Linkerd), and platform engineering frameworks (Backstage).
• Familiarity with FinOps practices and cloud cost tooling.
• Background in scaling platform teams and building developer portals or internal platforms.
• Knowledge of networking at scale, hybrid cloud, and edge deployments.
