Role Overview

Join American Express Enterprise Technology Services as a Data Engineer I in a full-time graduate program.

Contribute to reliable, scalable, secure, and well-governed data solutions for business, product, analytics, and technology teams.

The organization supports technology engineering, infrastructure, enterprise data platforms, information security, and related capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Work with data requirements, data models, data pipelines, database systems, Big Data patterns, and cloud-native data tooling.
  • Support production operations, data quality, and data governance practices.
  • Collaborate with engineers, product partners, architects, data practitioners, and business stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earn a bachelor’s degree in a listed technical field before the full-time start date.
  • Have foundational knowledge of SQL and at least one programming language such as Python or Java.
  • Understand data structures, algorithms, debugging, testing, and problem solving.
  • Be familiar with data requirements, data models, data pipelines, database systems, storage formats, and architecture patterns.
  • Demonstrate interest in data engineering, databases, data platforms, analytics, cloud data tooling, Big Data, or software engineering.
  • Bring strong communication, collaboration, organization, attention to detail, and learning agility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate between December 2026 and June 2027.
  • Know relational and non-relational database concepts, including indexing, partitioning, replication, encryption, and performance tuning.
  • Be familiar with Big Data, NoSQL, or cloud-native platforms such as HBase, Hive, MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis, BigQuery, Spanner, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or MS SQL Server.
  • Understand distributed systems, scalable storage, transaction processing, production support, ETL, lineage, documentation, and data quality.
  • Be familiar with Agile, Scrum, test-driven development, CI/CD, version control, and code reviews.
  • Understand data governance principles involving privacy, lineage, quality, security, and sensitive information protection.
