Job Summary

The Barge Engineer supervises and coordinates marine activities onboard, including safety, environmental, firefighting, lifting, rig moves, jacking, stability, ballast, helicopter operations, maintenance, and emergency response.

The role ensures the rig complies with applicable rules, codes, regulations, and industry best practices for personnel, environmental, and equipment safety.

Rig Move and Stability

Prepare rig moves, stability calculations for jacking, floating, and preloading, weather assessments, soil condition reviews, and rig move meetings.
Ensure jacking systems, drilling packages, cantilevers, cranes, loose items, watertight doors, towing equipment, and mooring winches are secured, maintained, certified, and ready.
Maintain accurate rig move records and perform watertight integrity checks.
Monitor loading, leg reactions, fuel, water, centers of gravity, and deck loading within design and stability limits.

Lifting and Drilling Operations

Supervise cargo loading, unloading, movement, critical and complex crane lifting operations, and personnel transfers.
Direct deck crew assignments and cargo movements while considering load distribution and the security of lifted items and personnel.
Coordinate with drilling crews and assign personnel to drilling and work-over operations as required.

Emergency Response

Participate in the rig Emergency Response Team according to the Emergency Plan and company procedures.
Instruct personnel on emergency procedures and ensure well-control and general safety drills are held and recorded.

Inspections and Equipment

Prepare for and participate in class, statutory, local, country, authority, and regulatory inspections and surveys.
Maintain statutory certification and records required by class, flag, STCW, IMO, and other regulatory bodies.
Monitor preventive maintenance and certification for marine, helideck, navigation, firefighting, lifesaving, and lifting equipment.
Coordinate maintenance, repairs, class work, audit recommendations, and hull and tank painting plans with relevant departments.

Helicopter and Housekeeping

Ensure helicopter operations are conducted safely and in accordance with aviation authorities, standards, and regulations, with valid helideck certification.
Ensure work areas are clean, orderly, and hazard-free, and that debris is disposed of under hazardous-material segregation and waste-management policies.

People Management

Provide teams with clear duties, responsibilities, and safety precautions before work begins.
Mentor, train, and develop team members, identify career advancement opportunities, and ensure required training and drills are completed.
Evaluate team performance through regular feedback and support the company performance management process.

Education and Experience

A BSc in Marine Engineering or an equivalent Maritime Academy Certificate of Competency is required.
At least six years of related experience is required, preferably on similar offshore installations.
A valid Maritime Academy Certificate of Competency is mandatory for self-propelled units.

Skills and Work Conditions

Advanced mathematical skills and stability calculation knowledge are required.
Situation awareness, self-motivation, teamwork, time management, and work management skills are required.
Intermediate English reading and writing ability is preferred.
The role requires day and night shifts and occasional climbing of stairs or ladders and walking.
