The Associate Security Engineer will join Xero's Security Defence team.
The role helps design, build, and improve capabilities for detecting, investigating, and responding to security threats.
The engineer will work with Security Operations, Security Response, Engineering, Product, CX, and Legal.
Team Context
Security Defence works across SIEM, SOAR, EDR, cloud security, and related tooling to protect Xero and its customers.
The team uses threat intelligence and security requirements to create practical controls and response capabilities.
The team values a high-trust, blameless, and learning-oriented culture.
Initial Focus
- Monitor, investigate, and respond to security alerts and suspected incidents with guidance.
- Contribute to detection, monitoring, enrichment, and response workflows across security platforms.
- Build and improve detection content, integrations, dashboards, and alerting.
- Develop runbooks, playbooks, and automations to reduce manual effort and speed response.
- Expand threat-intelligence-led detection engineering and automation coverage.

- The role is based in the Melbourne office with a hybrid working model.
- The model combines local team presence, global work, home working, and designated office boost days.
What We Are Looking For
- Curiosity in security engineering, cybersecurity, software engineering, cloud security, detection engineering, or a related discipline.
- Ability to learn unfamiliar codebases or platforms and apply established patterns with guidance.
- A growth mindset and ability to turn threat intelligence and research into practical detections and controls.
- Hands-on scripting, debugging, automation, or small integration experience.
- Experience working in an engineering, security, IT, operations, or technology team.
- Clear written and verbal communication and a collaborative approach to pairing and feedback.
- Responsible interest in AI-assisted tools is welcomed.
