Role Overview

AECOM is seeking an Associate Director or experienced Principal Consultant for its Development Planning and Management Team in the South East.

The role may be based in London, St Albans, or Birmingham and will primarily support a Spatial Planning Contract for a strategic client.

The position provides development management advice on transport planning matters affecting the Strategic Road Network.

Client and Project Delivery

  • Build relationships with public-sector stakeholders, private developers, and other third parties.
  • Manage complex tasks, deadlines, resources, workload planning, budgets, and client-specific KPIs.
  • Lead the review and delivery of complex transport planning documents to quality, budget, and timeline requirements.
  • Coordinate advice from AECOM specialists and report to the client as the AECOM lead.
  • Support evidence preparation for planning appeals, public inquiries, hearings, and examinations.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Review planning application documentation associated with development proposals affecting the Strategic Road Network.
  • Apply expertise in trip generation, trip distribution and assignment, junction capacity modelling, mitigation, and planning conditions.
  • Provide technical assurance and sign-off of development management recommendations.
  • Review third-party transport documents and communicate conclusions to clients and developer consultants.

Team Development

  • Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of transport planners and consultants.
  • Foster collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement within the team.
  • Promote diversity and inclusion and maintain a supportive, equitable workplace.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in transport planning, civil engineering, spatial or urban planning, or a related field.
  • Membership of CIHT, TPS, CILT, or a similar professional body; chartered membership is preferred.
  • Extensive postgraduate transport planning experience and proven leadership and mentoring capability.
  • Knowledge of UK transport planning principles, policies, and regulations.
  • Experience in strategic and local transport modelling and proficiency with transport planning tools.

Preferred Technical Experience

  • Experience with DMRB compliance reviews, GG104 Safety Risk Assessments, WCHARs, and Road Safety Audits or documentation is beneficial.
  • Knowledge or experience of the DCO process and Local Plan Examination process is advantageous.
