Role purpose and scope

Associate Director role in Tetra Tech's Fire Engineering team.

Lead technical delivery and strategic oversight across complex infrastructure, nuclear, commercial and high-hazard projects.

Develop innovative, performance-based fire engineering solutions where prescriptive guidance may be limited.

The team delivers focused specialist commissions and large multidisciplinary projects, with around 75% of workload in the nuclear sector.

Core responsibilities

  • Lead fire safety strategies, fire engineering assessments and specialist technical advice.
  • Integrate fire safety requirements into complex designs and support compliance with legislation, standards and regulatory expectations.
  • Oversee technical quality, project performance, resource planning and commercial delivery across multiple commissions.
  • Engage with clients, regulators, architects, design teams and multidisciplinary stakeholders.
  • Lead technical reports, fire safety strategies and engineering documentation through production, review and approval.
  • Own project scopes, fee proposals, delivery direction, budgets, timescales and quality requirements.
  • Support business development, client relationships, framework expansion and new business.
  • Mentor colleagues and contribute to technical standards, team capability and continuous improvement.

Qualifications and experience

  • Degree in Fire Engineering, Engineering, Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional competence through experience.
  • Significant fire safety engineering experience with a record of leading complex projects and technical delivery.
  • Experience working in regulated environments and advising on complex engineering challenges.
  • Strong understanding of fire engineering principles, methodologies, UK regulations and industry guidance.
  • Experience in the nuclear sector is advantageous but not essential.
  • Chartered status with the Institution of Fire Engineers or progress towards chartership is highly desirable.

Technical capabilities

  • Knowledge of UK fire legislation and guidance, including Approved Document B, BS 9999 and the PD 7974 framework.
  • Ability to apply modelling, calculations, performance-based design and engineering judgement.
  • Clear technical communication and strong professional relationship-building skills.
  • Technical report writing, quality assurance, project management and commercial awareness.

Working environment

  • Flexible hybrid working typically involves attending the office two to three days per week and working remotely for the remainder.
  • The team is primarily based in Warrington, with additional offices in West Cumbria and Basingstoke.
  • Fully remote working would be considered.
