Position Summary

Support Dan’s Legacy’s trauma-informed culinary job-skills training program for youth ages 15–25.

Provide hands-on culinary instruction, mentor participants, and support Dan’s Diner and catering operations.

Report to the Program Manager for Job Skills Training Programs and work under the Lead Chef Instructor.

Locations and Working Conditions

  • Work at program sites in New Westminster and Vancouver, with travel between sites potentially required.
  • Work primarily in a commercial kitchen and training environment.
  • Regular standing, lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, and repetitive movements are required.
  • The role includes exposure to hot surfaces, kitchen equipment, cleaning chemicals, and food allergens.
  • Evenings, weekends, and early mornings may be required for catering and special events.

Employment and Compensation

  • The position is full-time and fixed term until March 31, 2027, with potential for extension.

Program Leadership and Instruction

  • Deliver culinary instruction and provide constructive feedback under the Lead Chef Instructor’s guidance.
  • Coach, mentor, and supervise participants during food preparation, kitchen operations, and catering.
  • Reinforce workplace expectations, food safety, customer service, teamwork, and employment readiness.
  • Adapt teaching to individual learning needs and foster a safe, respectful, trauma-informed environment.

Kitchen Operations

  • Support food production for Dan’s Diner, catering services, and community meal programs.
  • Assist with menu preparation, inventory, receiving deliveries, stock rotation, and kitchen opening and closing.
  • Maintain organized, clean, and safe workspaces and comply with FoodSafe, sanitation, and organizational standards.
  • Monitor equipment and report maintenance concerns.

Program and Leadership Support

  • Assist with daily learning activities and kitchen production schedules.
  • Monitor attendance, engagement, and workplace performance and document participant progress in ShareVision and other systems.
  • Collaborate with Employment Coaches and program staff and participate in meetings and improvement initiatives.
  • Lead kitchen operations during delegation or the Lead Chef Instructor’s absence.

Administration

  • Maintain documentation for participant progress, attendance, production, inventory, and incident reporting.
  • Complete administrative duties within established timelines and participate in program evaluation and quality improvement.
  • Support onboarding and orientation of new instructional staff as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum three years of commercial kitchen experience.
  • Experience mentoring, coaching, or training others in a workplace or educational setting.
  • FoodSafe Level 1 certification, valid BC Class 5 driver’s licence, and ability to travel between sites.
  • Successful Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, and electronic documentation systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with youth or people facing barriers to employment is preferred.
  • Experience in employment training, social enterprise, nonprofit, or community-based programs is preferred.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and culturally safe practices is preferred.

Program Context

Dan’s Legacy provides clinically supported culinary job-skills training to youth facing mental health and employment barriers.

The program combines culinary training with counselling and outreach support and may prepare participants for hospitality work or further culinary education.
